Professional Development Program

About the program

The online professional development program has been designed specifically for pharmacists who are either accredited or intending to accredit to conduct medication reviews.

The Professional development program will guide you through the complete medication review process. A library of HMR and RMMR cases have been developed from which you can select your favorite six to customise your own CPD program. For each case, the same documentation (de-identified) is available that was provided to the actual reviewing pharmacist, including interview footage for HMR cases. These are real cases !!!

A structured activity sheet comes with each case that guides the participant through the medication review process.

At various stages of the review, questions are posed that cover:
  • The relevance of additional information
  • The significance of potential drug related problems (DRPs)
  • The appropriateness of different recommendations to resolve actual drug related problems
  • Prioritisation of drug related problems

The Referral

You will be presented with a referral, and just like in real life, you will need to consider what additional information you require to determine if drug related problems are present. Questions specific to each case will assist you in identifying which pieces of information are more or less relevant.

Additional information / Interview skills

Experience firsthand how leading experts conduct the interview process and learn what the most important parts of the interview are.

For the home medication review cases you will be provided with:

  • Recorded patient interview
  • Doctors notes and referral
  • Pathology results
For residential medication management review cases you will be provided with:
  • Copies of doctor's notes
  • Drug charts
  • Nurse's notes
  • Pathology results

Drug Related Problems (DPRs)

Based on all of the information available, you will be challenged to identify drug related problems. The answers to these questions will provide referenced, up to date additional information on the specific drug related problems being considered.

Recommendations to resolve DRPs

Each DRP may have multiple possible recommendations to resolve it. In the case studies, you will be asked to select which recommendations you feel the most appropriate for specific problems. Again, the answers will explore the different recommendations and indicate why particular recommendations are preferred.

Enhance your report writing skills

A sample report, prepared by Peter Tenni, or other selected accredited pharmacists, will be available for the specific case. This will allow you to compare style and content, as well as selection of issues to your own report. Participants will be required to identify the main issues that would be included in their report and prepare a draft report.

The Trainers

Dr Peter Tenni will be designing the cases. From time to time, however, we will be inviting reputable guest pharmacists to post a case and share their experiences.

The Discussion Board

One issue that is continually highlighted when talking to accredited pharmacists is the lack of peer contact, particularly for recently accredited pharmacists, or those practising as sole practitioners. The absence of support and/or peer review, makes it difficult to determine if the DRPs being identified and acted on are the most appropriate. This professional development program has been designed to address this issue. Our trainers will continually monitor and contribute to the discussion board.
